Equal parts zest and zeal, Flash Festival stemmed from a desire to bring an immersive festival experience to Italy. It started humbly in the summer of 2017, with friends and family lending their creativity to boost the cause. After a year out, Flash flashed back to its first year, but brought new energy to its Italian Eden.

Tucked away in Tuscany, its site is surrounded by stunning hills and a medieval castle, and is a short stroll from the gorgeous village of Castiglion Fiorentino. Think yoga sessions at sunrise and sanguine sunsets at twilight, an intimate utopia shared with new friends from around the world, soon to become old ones.

Taste is everything for FLASH. From fresh pappardelle to hand-spun pizza, special wine vintages to vintage wine-coloured shirts, everything is perfectly curated. A mix of feel-good disco, downbeat grooves and harder, euphoric beats makes our line-up sound as good lying down as it does getting down.

“Our festival reflects the personality of Tuscany – we are open, friendly and believe in great quality and simplicity,” festival Director Benedetta Venturini thinks. It’s this simple quality that sums up our festival.

No frills, no filler, no flashiness: just FLASH.

1ST LINEUP ANNOUNCEMENT

The initial line-up has been announced for Italy’s sun-soaked festival serving-up beautiful beats with the finest Tuscan eats.

Ready to dish up a unique sharing platter of food, music and wine for a third year, Tuscany’s FLASH festival is back with a bang – and a banging new line-up. Meticulously curated and spanning the globe, the line-up represents another helping of four-to-the-floor selectors, with a refreshing updated based on the new cutting-edge.

The many interconnectedness of its artists fits with the global family of FLASH itself, and a wish to create a community of likeminded lovers of good food, fine wine and special music. No flashiness, just FLASH.

We’re starting with four sub-zero cool selectors of the UK underground. Rhythm Section founder Bradley Zero will be bringing his grooviest of numbers to FLASH’s uniquely miniature, rustic setting, playing on his experience of holding down sets at some of the world’s coolest clubs. Joining him is cult Aussie selector DJ Boring with his paradoxically exciting head rush of house, injecting the sun-soaked festival with an even more potent Vitamin D glow.

Entering the mix is DJ of the moment Éclair Fifi, who cut her teeth on pirate radio but now bakes together Detroit techno with rave, bossing Radio1, Rinse FM and NTS residencies. Finally, Loods – who’s dropped two sell-out records on his buddy Mall Grab’s label as well as dishing out mixes for Boiler Room, Rinse FM, NTS and Triple J – is getting things kicking off.

Representing FLASH’s curated set of equally curatorial selectors, three renowned diggers are joining the party. Yu Su, the selector of the zeitgeist, is joining us. She’ll be spinning left-field dance music while keeping tabs on acid and rave-flecked tunes that Boiler Room, Music From Memory and Dekmantel have raved about. Top house DJ Laurence Guy returns for a second time to play through the Tuscan dusk, while the enigmatic Raphaël Top-Secret is set to rifle through his dizzying eclectic record bags.

We’ve also got a batch of European party-starters to warm-up with some fiery heaters. Local talent is abundant, repping our love of Italy. Disconnected – from Castiglion Fiorentino itself – will be bringing their disco grooves, Italian duo The Camels will be returning with their mad rhythms, while Italian DJ Pinello will be dropping his eclectic range of funk, soul and boogaloo. Bella is hopping over from Amsterdam to get things going, Rantil is set up for a special disco house set, while French duo Menu Malin x Mauresque will be showcasing their psychedelic trippers and afro-house rhythms.

SPEAKING TO CREATOR BENEDETTA VENTURINI

IT’S FLASH 2020 TIME! WELL, NEARLY. WHAT CAN WE EXPECT?

The third edition of FLASH! We are incredibly excited to expand our FLASH family bringing more people from around the world to those Tuscan fields of FLASH.

I am so proud to say that every year we are bringing more and more to the table, making sure that the program is refined to perfection. We have now established a special buzz around the festival and tickets are on sale now so go go go.

HOW DID THE FESTIVAL COME ABOUT?

At the time, Karl and I were living in Berlin surrounded by very inspiring people and creative places. We had just spent a crazy five years working on world tours and festivals around the world.

I dreamt to create a music festival that celebrates the nature, style and taste of Tuscany. An experience that combines music with food and wine and to be able to gather like-minded people, travellers and friends from around the world to experience Tuscany in a new, exciting and fun way. And there you are…

WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND THE NAME? WHY ‘FLASH’?

I always thought of the festival experience as a moment in time, a sudden FLASH. Something unique that only happens once and you cannot replicate it. Only if you are lucky enough to live it and be there at the right time

THERE’S CAREFULLY SELECTED FOOD, WINE AND ARTISTS. WHY IS CURATION SO IMPORTANT?

Tuscany is a way of living, always searching for the finest taste and best quality to bring to the table. I thought why not combine the deepest love for food and wine that Tuscans have (that I have) with those genres in vogue that best suit this incredible panorama?

Let’s say that Tuscany deserves it – for its natural beauty and its unstoppable pursuit of art in history.

WHAT DOES FLASH – APART FROM GALLONS OF NATURAL WINE – BRING TO THE TABLE THAT NO OTHER ITALIAN FESTIVAL DOES?

The multi-sensorial festival experience. FLASH goes beyond music, combining it with food and wine activities that bring people to live together through an immersive 3-day experience.

It’s catching the latest artists vibing clubs and parties around the world in an intimate setting, with your mates, old and new, without being squashed in the crowds.

WHY TUSCANY? WHAT IS TUSCAN CULTURE?

To be able to bring other people and travellers to see Tuscany with my eyes and live it like a real local. For many years I brought Tuscany to them through my hand-made gnocchi classes, home-cooked dinners, my love for olive oil and, obviously, my accent! That’s why I decided to start FLASH, to let the others to experience Tuscany in a real authentic way, through an immersive festival experience.

LASTLY – CAN YOU SHARE US ONE SECRET ABOUT THIS YEAR’S LINE-UP?

Work in progress… but we can promise the same fun beats and good vibes of last year. Expect poolside disco, late night fist pumps and would be rude to not throw in a little italo-disco for obvious reasons that embrace the Tuscan culture. We like to program artists from all around the world: live soul and indie through the day, ongoing house and disco until sunrise.  The line-up will be released after Tier 1 sale is finished, so the exact date is a surprise!

WHAT MAKES FLASH SHINE

Since FLASH is so unique in so many different ways, it’s the perfect festival to write about in mags and websites talking all things music, food, wine and travel. Here are some suggestions and angles based around our special attributes:

TUSCAN CULTURE

FLASH is all about celebrating the fruits of Tuscany: and we’re not just talking about the olives. From food (fresh pasta, pizza and pastries) to wine (natural, local wines) to music (disco, house and Italo) we’re here to celebrate the beauty and diversity of the region.

Any travel piece centred on Tuscan culture could certainly mention FLASH, or, more generally, copy on Italian festivals could be boosted by featuring us.

FOOD AND WINE FESTIVAL LISTS

Although we’re a music festival, we do food and wine too. Like, a lot of it. We’d love to be included in any food and wine festival lists, showing that a) they don’t have to be flashy to be fun and b) they can integrate a music programme seamlessly into the mix.

ITALIAN DANCE MUSIC

Italian dance music has never been more in vogue; think Italo disco nights, Italo house compilations from Safe Trip, BICEP’s love for the sound, emerging acts like Nu Guinea and so on.

We’d love to chat about the trend, and what it means for FLASH’s inclusion of ace international and local artists. Just make sure you have unlimited minutes on your contract.

INTIMATE AUDIENCES

Our audience is capped at only a thousand punters. It’s a properly boutique festival; you can walk round it in just a couple of minutes (add two after the wine tasting), meaning that a friendly community of music and food lovers is formed rapidly.

We’re here to give you insight on why intimate, boutique festivals are ace.

INSTAGRAM FRIENDLY SETTINGS

Social media butterflies, we’re looking at you. Our Tuscan backdrop is stunning, filled with rolling hills, a picturesque castle and (fingers crossed) a load of sun.
It would be an honour to be in any piece on the most Instagrammable festivals: the camera doesn’t lie, after all (check out our press shots here ).

DIY ATTITUDE

From our DIY camping to wine tasting audience participation, impromptu Zen Tent afterparties to local acts, we have a properly DIY attitude. We do our absolute best to accommodate everyone, and want to create an atmosphere where the audience shapes the experience as much as we do.

FLASH was started just for friends and family, after all. So we can wax lyrical to you about what it’s like to start a festival from scratch on a mini site, powered by love and pasta.

Grazie mille
